The Sign

Hello friends and welcome to episode 39, and I have a question for you! How well do you know yourself? If you want to create a fabulous space for yourself, it helps to understand who you are as much as possible - what are your likes, dislikes, and - this is big one, your motivations and subconscious thoughts that nurture these preferences. There are so many ways to get to the bottom of what motivates you - I talk about this in depth in the very first episode of this podcast called You Are Here - whether its understanding how you function in your day to day, who you’re trying to please, or listening to your authentic self - motivation is a multidimensional subject.

One way to do that is super popular right now is through astrology. I have been obsessed with astrology for as long as I. can remember and while I am by no means a professional astrologer yet, I can tell you a little bit about how the cosmos can affect your preferences in the way you treat your home. And if astrology doesn’t float your boat, I totally get it - feel free to have a listen just for the fun of it, you might be surprised by what you hear.

If you have access to your birthchart, knowing your moon sign or what, if anything, is in your fourth house will give you the most detailed information about your relationship with home, but while not everyone knows their birthcharts super well, pretty much everyone knows their sun sign and I am going to stick to sun sign astrology today because its so accessible, and that can tell you a lot too because our sun sign, or the sign of our birthdate is all about our identities. but if you know your moon sign or house placements your can pay attention to all of the readings for those signs.

So lets get into it.

I’m starting with our dear friend Capricorn - I did a quick survey on Instagram and there were more capricorns than any other sign- by a long shot and this sign tends to get roasted a lot too so I wanted to give my caps some love and let you go first.

Capricorn- it’s surprising how this otherwise super pragmatic sign will spend time, care, and money to create a fabulous nest, thats because this career oriented sign feels their home or any other space they spend a significant amount of time (ahem, their office) is an expression of their personal success. Don’t be surprised when walking into a capricorns home for the first time if your greeted by high end art pieces, rich colors, or moody lightly. Its not uncommon for caps to be lovers of all things vintage, and depending on the person - this could range from victorian antiques to 1950’s kitsch. But you will see a consistent time period in most Caps homes. This earth sign knows how to shape the space they inhabit, and they want you to see how cultured, well traveled, and knowledgeable they are. They want their homes to be a expression of their exciting lives, because - what’s the point of working as hard and as smart as they do if they don’t have anything to show for it?

Designer tip - make sure to add a little playfulness and a few light colors to balance everything out.

If you have an Aquarius friend, you may realize you’ve never actually seen their place. While this sign is all about fighting for causes at the community level, they are conversely extremely private and guarded when it comes to letting people into their inner circle AND they are most likely to be moving or switching up their living situation every couple of years because their souls are rest-less and wandering in nature. If you do get inside the lair of an Aquarius this sign is all about letting their freak flag fly high. We are talking fun and whimsy - and this will happen on any budget.

Aquarius is the sign most likely to use holiday string lights as decor well into adulthood, these folks do not shy away from color or pattern, but they do tend to keep their decoration efforts to a concentrated area, so rather than seeing a total home full of quirk, you’ll see curator vignettes of the Aquarius’ true heart. A tip for the aquarius- look for a home with big windows so you never feel boxed in.

So many cozy blankets, so many candles, so much wine!! Pisces have to create a sanctuary for themselves to recover from the endless chaos of the world around them and all the energies they pick up! They also instinctively know they have to balance their watery tendencies with opposing elements like earthy prized vegetable gardens, make shift planters on roof tops, or even just frequent fresh flowers. Plus fiery elements like a central hearth or a roaring fire pit for them to scry into oblivion. Music is often a prominent feature in their homes as well, if it isn’t a variety of instruments, a good listening set up is almost always available. Alexa - play Johnny Cash. Designer tip - give yourself some structure with repeating wood elements through out your space - not everything has to be different and unique!

Now for fiery Aries - these rams can fall into one of two categories - but one thing is for sure - they always have space for projects and side hustles, whether its crafting, art, music, or weight lifting, and it may change every time you visit an Aries space - in fact one category of Aries is most-likely of all the signs to be in the the constant state of redecorating. Aries is frequently overcome with bolts of genius ideas for the next big thing, their homes may look different every time you come over

the second type is too busy starting committees and projects outside their home that they never really settle into a space and make their own. They figure they won’t be in a particular place long anyways so whats the point, but ten years later it can be puzzling why they never bothered to add homey touches. designer tip - don’t be afraid to add something soft and frivolous to your home, just because it makes you feel good.

Taurus on the other hand will make any space they stay in for even a single evening feel like its been transformed into the coziest bed and breakfast in the region.

Some taurus’ even get their living space to  editorial photo session quality by using a wide variety of trendy house plants that no one else can seem to keep alive.

Un-decor related and yet essential to any Taurian home is the never ending parade of food. A taurus without a charcuterie platter is like a boat without a sail.

Don’t be shock when you find out that your taurus pal splurged on cashmere throw blankets - these bulls are all about that tactile luxury.

Despite their insistence that they are not frivolous— and they aren’t, there always seems to be a large dedicated area to clothing and shoes, even if this is mainly hiking and gardening equipment.

Taurus are particularly good at finding hidden gem homes - venturing into strange corners of their cities - down seeming desolate streets to reveal spaces with sweeping, breathtaking views . Don’t get me wrong - taurus is incredibly practical- they are not indulgent  for indulgences sake- but they strive for deep comforts and that often leads to a space

that feels like a place you never want to leave. There also the likelihood that a taurus will have some kind of well curated collection - but nothing too eccentric- where its records, wine, or a series of prints by a certain mid century graphic designer - taurus won’t brag about it, but trust its there. Taurus is also the most likely to really invest in bedding - plush comforters, the best ergonomic pillows, and cozy sheets that really drive home this signs focus on feeling good. Designer tip - don’t let your exquisite taste go to your head.

If you’ve ever been to a dinner party that stayed in your mind for years afterwards, it’s possible you were the guest of a gemini. This sign is endlessly interesting,  boredom is not in their vocabulary. Stepping into a gemini’s home can occasionally feel like you’ve enter an art installation at the extreme, but most of the time these chatty air signs focus their energy into a few key conversation pieces.

Similar to Taurus- Gems are also collectors because Gemini’s love information, but this sign is much more likely to have an oddball, Guinness World record breaking collection that they hold exclusively for the purpose of telling house guests about. But they won’t chat your ear off the whole time. Gemini’s LOVE to hear about you and are experts at asking the most tailored questions to get you to open up, so their houses always feature a mix of communal open spaces and cozy niches for one on one conversations communication is everything for Geminis- whether its a dedicated space for their computers where they spend hours writing emails, or even just a great chair to curl up in while they text their friends all night.

don’t be surprised if there is a secret but significant amount of space dedicated to a board game shrine,  because there really isn’t a better way to get to know someone then to see them loose to you at trivial pursuit. Designer tip - i’ve got two - stock up on beautiful glassware to wet your whistle once in a while and dedicate and quiet zone thats phone and computer free where you can learn to savor moments of quiet.

Cancer - the original sign of all things home, and these crabs take home making seriously - they aren’t afraid to put in time, effort, and money in to realize their vision for their dream home - after-all, these homebodies spend so much time there - they have to feel 100% happy with their space. Cancers are true DIYers - ready to get their hands dirty with weekend projects that let them leave their mark on their homes. They’ve always got a home improvement project on their brains, but their homes never feel under construction or incomplete. If you’re lucky enough to visit a cancer’s home - the hospitality is non stop. If you are a cancer who likes to host - make sure you provide a variety of seating for your guests and try to maximize spaces like dining rooms with an expandable table so you can invite all your friend groups over at once!

Speaking of lots of friends - Leo’s are natural entertainers, and they create homes with real heart. Leo’s natural creativity allows them to enjoy setting up a home where almost everything is designed to be used in support of large gatherings with friends and family. Leos can embrace their inner performer with a dedicated karaoke space. To make sure they can see all of their guests, and check their own reflect out from time to time by incorporating large mirrors in every room.

If anyone was meant to have a giant cozy sectional sofa - its Leo, with their whole pack of people hanging out almost 24/7. Designer tip - make sure there is a tiny corner thats JUST for you, and not your guests.

Next up is Virgo, and you’ll know how much virgo someone has in the chart based on their relationship to cleaning and organizing. This sign thrives off of the old saying - a place for everything and everything in its place - we are talking grids, straight lines, earthy but minimalist materials, and smart simplicity at its prime.

Voted most likely to have OCD, Virgos take great care and pleasure in cleaning, organizing, arranging, and bring order to a space, so its important that their homes are clutter free and so the busy virgo mind can take a breather and truly practice relaxing when they have downtime.  Worrying and finding problems to solve can be an olympic sport with this sign, so leaving lots of open space can hep a virgo have a sense of overseeing their surroundings. Designer tip - practice a little playfulness by adding a splash of color somewhere, and don’t worry if it’s perfect - anything a virgo does is done right.

Our dear Libra has impeccable instincts when it comes to aesthetic- this sign is ruled by Venus after-all and similar to Taurus they know who to set a mood with fabulous things - Libras are definitely very materialistic- just keep in mind this might manifest in very different ways - I know so many Libras who insist they hate shopping and then they spend hours browsing electronics online and drop serious coin for the right work out attire, so - just keep in mind, yes a stereotypical libra is basically a Disney princess but this has many variations. Whatever that looks like, it is important for a libra to embrace their inner connoisseur of life’s finer things because that is where they truly shine. Where Libras need a little assistance is when it comes to picking the dang thing, making a final decision - which for many libra’s can feel like simply rejecting all the other possibilities. Libras homes tend to function best when they have a seasonal rotation of decor, so staying attuned to whatever holidays you celebrate can be really important and this allows you to embrace your hesitancy with committing to a look because you are always swapping things out. That or ask an Aries to decide for you.

There is no other sign in the zodiac more layered than Scorpio. This sign has complex deep feelings and loves their privacy. When it comes to their home, it can be super important for Scorpio to let go of their compulsions to control every aspect around them, and let their space feel more dreamy and carefree.

Scorpios take life and all that comes their way very seriously - they are stereotypically drawn to rich, darker colors, shades of red, and even black, but I repeat, this is a stereotype and not necessarily what will bring out the best in scorpio, so use your keen intuition on color.

Scorpios are the wise ones of the zodiac and shouldn’t be afraid to let guests know this - a floor to ceiling bookcase full of a mix of non fiction - as scorpios are often absolute geniuses in their fields and fiction, because they need to let their brains unwind and wander -can serve as a great focal point and talking piece in the main living space. Scorpios are less likely to entertain groups but very likely to stay up until the early morning hours in deep conversation with a dear friend, so creating side by side cozy arm chairs with ottomans can really support scorpios lifestyle.

Now if you know a Sagittarius, you know that they are basically the coolest sign of the twelve, let’s just be real - these people are social butterflies and know how to light up a room. When it comes to their homes, it is all about storytelling for the these ponies - every element from the art on the wall to the chair you sat down on can produce a lively, riveting story from their sag owner - its completely enchanting. Whether its a great piece they found on one of their many vacations, a handmade one of a kind by a local crafter, something thats been handed down for generations in their family, or something they found on the street that they saved from the dumpster - a sag will have a fascinating tale for all their belongings.

And when they aren’t out traveling the globe they love hosting small groups and learning new things. Because they feel passionately about everything in their home, they do have the tendency to be mild to moderate hoarders. Design tip - find a common thread between all the cool artifacts you display in your home and don’t be afraid to have a yard sale - think of all the cool stories you’ll get from it

We did it! Thats all twelve signs and boy oh boy if you are still listening you are a jewel because that is a lot of bite sized info in one episode.
